Ep #38: Is It Time To Quit?
APRIL 13, 2023 • 14min
A quandary that most of us will be confronted with at various points in our careers is whether or not it’s time to quit your job. Forging a new pathway in your career can be daunting because it often means leaving a certain level of security and familiarity behind. This is why it’s so important to take ownership of your decisions, knowing that you are the one driving your career.
Today I want to talk about when it might be time to move on and start with a new organisation and some of the factors to consider when faced with this decision. This episode is all about helping you to gain awareness of your current situation and looking at your situation from an objective perspective to determine what is best for you.
First of all, it’s really important to understand what is motivating you to consider leaving your job. I share some of the key motivations which might be relevant to you. Perhaps you have outgrown your role, you’re looking for something more exciting or you experienced a terrible day and want to move on. Whatever the case, it’s important to understand your motivations for wanting to leave and explore all the opportunities in front of you.
Think about what else you have done about the situation and if there are roles within your current organisation that you could move toward. We will always be faced with difficult situations in the workplace at some point so make sure that you are running toward something, not running away in fear, frustration or anger. If you are running away, you’ll almost certainly run into a similar circumstance somewhere down the track.
When you are considering a career move, it’s so important to make sure that your transition is aligned with your goals and career master plan. Don’t just take any job so that you can pay the bills. Continue to keep your dreams in the forefront and make decisions according to what you really want, not just what is easy. Be really intentional about your next move and bold enough to have challenging conversations to make sure you’re in the best possible situation.
I encourage you to listen with an open mind today and think about where you are in terms of your career transition. Be really honest with yourself as you answer some of the prompts so that you can gain insight into your own thinking. Understanding what is driving your decisions is really powerful and from this place, you will make an informed and intentional decision that forges you ahead in the right direction.
