Ep #41: Reverse Engineering Your Career

MAY 04, 2023 ā€¢ 15min

Reverse engineering your career is a great way to take control of your professional development and achieve your goals.

We can use reverse engineering by starting with the end goal in mind and working backwards to determine the steps needed to reach that goal. In other words, instead of blindly following a traditional career path and hoping opportunities present themselves, you're intentionally designing your own path based on your desired outcome.

In this episode, I explore how you can use this method to direct your career to achieve your ultimate goals and outcomes. Weā€™ll look at the benefits and steps and examine any potential pitfalls so you can look out for them as they come your way.

Step 1: Define Your End Goal
The first step is to identify your end goal. Ask yourself: What do I want to achieve in my career? Do I want to become a CEO, start my own business, or become a recognised expert in a particular field? Whatever your goal may be, write it down and be as specific as possible.

Step 2: Research Your Goal
Once you've identified your end goal, start researching what it takes to achieve it. Look at people who have already achieved what you want to achieve and study their career paths. What skills, education, and experiences did they have? What steps did they take to get where they are?

Step 3: Draw out your roadmap
After conducting your research, it's time to map out your roadmap. Determine what skills you need to develop, what education you need to obtain, any soft skills you need to practice and what experiences you need to gain. Break down your plan into manageable steps and set specific timelines for each step.

Step 4: Go for it!
Finally, execute your plan. Take the steps you've mapped out and put them into action. Keep in mind that your plan may change as you progress, and that's okay. Be flexible and adjust your plan as needed.

By following this method youā€™ll have more control over your career path, are more likely to achieve your goals because you have a clear plan, design a career path that is unique to you and aligns with your values and interests and ensures that you develop skills and gain experience that will make you more valuable to employers and leadership positions.

But remember, your plan may not work out as expected, it can be difficult to predict future trends and changes in the job market, and you may miss out on opportunities that come your way because you're so focused on your end goal.

Reverse engineering your career can be a great way to take control of your professional development and achieve your goals. With a clear plan, hard work, and flexibility, you can create a career path that is unique to you and aligns with your values and interests.
